Words Matter: Disabilities

Most of us know how harmful words like the n-word can be. However, most of the time, people say words that they don't know are harmful and inappropriate to use when talking about people with mental, physical and/or intellectual and developmental disabilities. When used casually, words like "crazy", "bipolar", "OCD," "crippled", "lame," "dumb," "nutty", "looney tunes", "handicapped", "stupid," "psycho," "ret*rded" "mongoloid", "imbecile", "psycho", “Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs" and so many other words that we flippantly use to describe people or actions perpetuate harmful stereotypes about people with physical, mental, intellectual and developmental disabilities.

These words trigger people with disabilities and social conditions, which makes it a source of mass psychological harm for an already marginalized group and fuel the fire of stigma that runs rampant in our everyday conversation, in what we read and see in the media, movies and so much more to insult people with cognitive impairments, autism, Down syndrome, ADD, and other developmental disabilities or social conditions.  Therefore, we the people, ask that you not use them (or make excuses to use them) and to know that those ignoring this request are also ableists and are contributors to the harm.
