Police brutality is the excessive and unwarranted use of force by law enforcement. It is an extreme form of police misconduct or violence and is a civil rights violation. It also refers to a situation where officers exercise undue or excessive force against a person. 1,134 people were killed by police in 2021, almost more than any other year in recent history. 97% of people killed by police in 2021 were killed by police shootings. Tasers, physical force, and police vehicles accounted for most other deaths. Yet, police officers were charged with a crime in only 11 of these cases, that is only 1% percent of all killings by police.
